Financial Welfare Rights Service

Home Macmillan Services Financial Welfare Rights Service

We know that money worries can be all-consuming.

The Financial Welfare Rights team offer specialised support to people who have been diagnosed with cancer. This includes helping people maximise their income, reduce expenditure, access entitlement, and offering advice on issues related to healthcare costs. For nearly 20 years, we have been supporting people affected by cancer, as well as patients referred to us by Dorothy House Hospice Care for those facing cancer or other life-limiting conditions.

Our help is free and available to people living in Bath and North East Somerset, Wiltshire (excluding people who are being treated at Salisbury District Hospital) and Somerset (the area previously covered by Mendip District Council). If you live outside these areas but are being treated at Royal United Hospital (RUH) Bath we will also support you.

We work with our referral partners at the RUH and Dorothy House.

How we help

Getting to know your unique circumstances is key to meeting your needs. We will meet with you, either in your home, over video or on the phone, to:

  • Make sense of your financial situation
  • Advise you on your statutory entitlements, available grants, etc
  • Show you how to access financial support
  • Support you to make any benefits applications

After understanding your situation, we will work with you on your next steps. A dedicated Financial Wellbeing Advisor will be your single point of contact. They will stay in close contact to support you and update you on the progress of any claim.

Who we help

We can help those who:

  • Are being treated at the RUH and receiving active treatment or are about to start treatment
  • Have cancer or a life-limiting condition and are supported by Dorothy House
  • Are carers for someone with cancer (this includes children in caring roles)
  • Have been bereaved as a result of cancer

What we aim for

We’ll work with you to find ways to afford access to your treatment, stay warm at home, and support you with any worries you might have about paying your bills.

Our team of advisors are Macmillan’s highest-performing income maximisation team nationally.
